When looking for images to use for printing on to canvas it is important to look for the highest resolution possible for maximum print quality for your canvas print.

Most images that come off a digital camera will be sufficient for large format printing using dye sublimation printing. Ideally when taking a photograph with the intention of reproducing the picture on to a stretched canvas or other products like wallpaper, blinds, banners or flags it is always best to have your setting at high resolution to get the sharpest quality print. This does take a large amount of memory space but the results will be a clear.

The only real difference between a high and low resolution image is the amount of dots per inch know as DPI that are used to create the image. The higher mega pixel camera you have taking the picture, the higher resolution the photos will be. Most cameras that can take photos above 3 mega pixels should be more than adequate to provide you with high resolution images. Keep in mind that you must have your camera set to the highest possible resolution when capturing your images.

Most artwork software programs allow you to resize an image when you open the file, but it's important to understand why simply resizing a low resolution image will not produce a true high resolution image. The main advantages of dye sublimation printing has been the fact that it is a continuous-tone technology, where each dot can be any colour. In contrast, inkjet printers can vary the location and size of ink droplets, a process called dithering, but each drop of ink is limited to the colours of the inks. Consequently, a dye-sublimation printer produces true continuous tones appearing much like a chemical photograph. An inkjet print is composed of droplets of ink and scattered to simulate continuous tones, but under magnification the individual droplets can be seen.

Dye sublimation offers advantages over inkjet printing. For one, the prints are dry and ready to handle as soon as they exit the printer or heatpress. The inks transfer from the dye sublimation paper to the canvas fabric in a gas state and through pressure become part of the polyester fabric. Dye-sublimation printing process is primarily used to print on polyester or other synthetic fabrics. It is used for many applications such as trade show banners or table covers, t-shirts, bike uniforms, competitive swimwear, soccer jerseys and flags. The images are initially printed on coated transfer paper as a reverse image of the final design, which is then transferred onto polyester fabric in a heat press operating at a temperature around 180 to 210 C (375 F). Under high temperature and pressure, the dye turns into a gas and permeates the fabric and then solidifies into its fibers. The fabric is permanently dyed so it can be washed without damaging the quality of the image.

Dye-sublimation has many commercial uses. It allows consumers to feature their favourite photos on purses and totes without the worry of fading, cracking or peeling.

There are two types of dye sublimation inks available in the market. The most popular one is aqueous dye sublimation ink for use in both desktop and large format printers.
